Workshop – Intro to Norwegian Fiddling
December 4, 2016 @ 4:00 AM
Have chops, will travel… fiddlers looking to expand their tune repertoire to seemingly unfamiliar lands, this workshop is for you. Learn the old time fiddling of Norway: the variety of tunes, rhythms and compelling grooves. At it’s roots, Norwegian fiddling has a lot in common with American Old Time fiddling. Cross tuning, double-stops, double stringed bowing and tonalities are shared techniques from one genre to the next. And because Scandinavian countries share the same origin for their fiddle traditions, learning this style is a great way to start exploring this culture’s music. The workshop will introduce you to the older tune types, such as springar and halling, and to some newer types, such as waltz, schottische, polka and mazurka. You’ll leave a few tunes richer with the skills to perform them. Teaching will be done by ear. Recording devices are recommended.
